Research Finds Hip Fractures Related to Actos
Since Takeda Pharmaceuticals launched Type-2 Diabetes medication Actos in 1999, consumers have been put at risk for developing bladder cancer. However, recent findings show that bladder-cancer may not be the only inherent risk associated with Actos. According to one team of Scottish researches, Actos may need another warning label revision to highlight the adverse side effect of possible hip fracture. The study published in Diabetologia in early November of 2012 claims that Actos prescribing labels inform users of the increased risk of bone fractures, but does not properly warn consumers of hip fractures as an adverse side effect of the product. Data from the research concludes that out of the 37,479 patients treated with Actos, 176 suffered from hip fractures. The study also found that cumulative exposure of the patient to Actos over several years increased the risk furthermore, especially when used for a time period of 5 to 10 years. Patients who are the most at risk for hip fractures while using Actos include persons who have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis (MS), or hypertension (high blood pressure). Hip fractures resulting from treatment with Actos has sparked concern for many as this has consequently lead to a higher mortality rate when using this medication. The study has also found that other thiazolidinediones medications similar to Actos had similar impacts on patients. This includes type-2 diabetes medicines such as the popular treatment Avandia. Actos Injuries
In a study released August 24, 2010 Actos was found to have the same dangerous side effects as Avandia. While both drugs have been under FDA scrutiny for several years, some studies had shown that Actos was less dangerous than Avandia. With this new study, evidence points to both drugs having the same damaging cardiovascular effects:
Heart Attack:
A heart attack occurs typically when an artery that supplies blood to the heart muscle becomes blocked and that area of the muscle does not receive oxygenated blood. The incidence of heart attack with Actos was shown to be the same as with Avandia. With any heart attack heart muscle dies and if too much heart muscle is damaged, a person may die. If a person recovers from a heart attack they are more susceptible to other heart problems like congestive heart failure. If you or a relative has had a heart attack while taking Actos, contact JArcher Law today.
Acute Heart Failure:
Heart failure occurs as fluid builds up on the heart and lungs making it more difficult for the heart to pump. Each time the heart pumps the fluid overload compromises the pumping action and the heart becomes less and less efficient. Heart failure can lead to death if not treated promptly. Symptoms include swelling of the feet, legs, and hands and shortness of breath. If you are on Actos and experiencing these symptoms call your doctor immediately. If you are taking Actos and have been treated for these symptoms you may be entitled to be compensated for your injuries. If you are a relative has had heart failure while taking Actos, contact JArcher Law today.
Now that a study has shown that Actos is as damaging to the heart as Avandia, many who have felt safe need real answers.
